Drawing inspiration from the concept of the coal miner’s canary, the Urban Canary is an electronic pet that reacts to pollution. It was designed to be carried by a child as they go about their day. The idea is that, through various sensors, it continually monitors air pollution and gets uneasy, and even anxious, as the levels rise. The bird’s emotions, which are expressed through an LED light, as well as vibrations, are a way of letting the child know if they’re surrounded by health risks. And, at the end of each day, you can go to the app and find a summary of the areas, times, and amount of pollution that the canary, and your child, were exposed to.
