A Villa in Riyadh Designed by Young Egyptian Architects and a Portuguese Furniture Powerhouse
March 9, 2022 Alia Fawaz

Spread across ten beautifully curated rooms, the biggest challenge for Karim Abdul Muttalib and Ann Abukhalil, the two founders of K.A. Interiors, was to make sure the entire villa reflected a unified theme while still giving each room its unique character and identity.

To fulfil their task, a maximalist design approach was adopted by the design duo, where clean marble surfaces along with different kinds of wood and panels, eye-catching sculpture pieces and accessories played major roles. Earthy tones of greys, blacks and browns provided the perfect backdrop for each unique space, while splashes of burgundy, Karim’s signature colour, added dramatic accents throughout the villa. In addition to burgundy, gold is also predominant which created a warm, indulging atmosphere in almost every room. From the dramatic dining table, mirrors, lighting fixtures, to legs on the dining and kitchen chairs, gold was tastefully injected giving each space the right measure of glamour and opulence without going overboard.

“Each room was a masterpiece on its own,” shared the duo. “Each served a different purpose and needed its own touch of details.” The designers worked closely with Covet House to select the beds, chairs, sofas, accessories and lighting pieces that allowed them to create the desired ambience for each room. Karim and Ann believe in creating limitless designs that serve both function and aesthetics where attention to detail makes a project whole, as can be witnessed in the opulent villa.

ENTRYWAY
Starting with the dramatic entrance area that reflects the modern classic vibe of the house, the first point of entry sets the scene for playful luxury. Two illuminated figurines sit on each side of the elegant walnut front door with its incredible custom-made handle. The spacious foyer is accentuated by a round mirror that compliments the bold marble console table. To offset these statement features and allow them to shine, the walls are covered with neutral coloured classical boiserie.

DINING ROOM
High ceilings and neutral walls give way to the star of the room: a one-of-a-kind gold dining table. One of Covet House’s signature pieces, the Fortuna Dining Table by Boca do Lobo brings this room to life along with the lush velvet u-shaped dining chairs with brass legs. The sophisticated matching black sideboard and tall cabinet in stainless steel and gold accents, also by Boca do Lobo, tastefully complement the stunning dining centrepiece.

KITCHEN
Fully equipped with the latest state-of-art amenities, the luxurious and inviting kitchen features dark cabinets and wall panels that create a lovely contrast with the white marble floors and rose gold ornamental lights. A central marble counter with two vintage glam bar stools by Koket is the perfect place for a cosy dinner or breakfast on the go.

BEDROOMS
A sanctuary for blissful sleep, the master bedroom exudes pure comfort and elegance. The brown monochrome curtains and wooden flooring allow the dramatic headboard and opulent suspension lighting to take centre stage. Classic decorative walls mixed with statement pieces create an ambience of refinement but also a very contemporary feel. After a long day, the most desirable place to be is inside the jaw-dropping Diamond bathtub (by Maison Valentina) in the open space bathroom adjacent to the master bedroom. In the second master bedroom and guest bedroom, the tones and shades of grey and brown are also extensively present with touches of gold and hidden lights creating an equally warm ambiance.

LIVING ROOM
The largest room in the villa, the living space is an open area that conveniently combines the hallway, kitchen and dining room. An earthy palette of grey, brown, green and off-white creates the perfect setting for strong pieces, such as the crystal chandelier and the Latza centre table by Brabbu with a veneered walnut top framed by hammered brushed aged brass. The elegant living area is the perfect place to chill and unwind on matching comfortable sofas and chairs.

OFFICE
The ideal place for quiet concentration, the home office space, is designed with practicality and comfort in mind but with the right dose of flair. Not to be outdone by the other rooms, the office still features the signature gold elements, seen in the matching mirror and lighting pieces. The modern green carpet nicely offsets the dark brown walls and wood flooring.

CHILDREN’S BEDROOMS
No doubt the most magical area in the entire villa, this playful bedroom is not short of imagination or creativity. Inspired by dreams and reaching for the clouds – quite literally – the room features gorgeous gold arches and wall fittings as well as a lovely frosty pink bed with pistachio green accessories. The only problem we could imagine with this space is that being sent to your room will actually be a treat!
