Though it’s not a revolutionnary concept (Dior had a convertible clutch in the 1970s) Chanel’s signature quilted leather makes this a most elegant take on one of the most practical handbag designs ever devised.

Revealed during the runway show for the A/W 2018/19 Ready-to-Wear collection, it’s a tote with built-in handles and two shoulder straps but it easily folds over into a clutch. It also comes in various sizes, from XS to XL.

It’s two-tone design means the colour and texture combinations are practically endless, and the initial array is full of surprises. From royal blue with hot pink to crushed black calfskin, there’s sure to be a perfect match for just about any personality.

Named after 31 Rue Cambon, Chanel’s first ever boutique (which recently reopened after extensive renovation), the bag also references the popular French expression ‘se mettre sur son 31’, which loosely translates as dressed to the nines in English.
