Glide in Plain Sight: A Cool, New, Open-Walkaround Electric Hydrofoil
August 16, 2024 Ziad Taha

Tyde is an unconventional new boat brand. Founded in 2021, it manufactures emission-free electric motorboats that use hydrofoiling technology developed by America’s Cup sailing boats to maximise efficiency (and cut energy usage by 80 per cent). “Everyone in the boating industry knew they need to change, to get away from carbon,” explains Tyde’s founder, Chistophe Ballin. “We are trying to show them how that can be done.” Their first model, a 2-million-USD 43-footer named The Icon, was designed by BMW Designworks with an inside-out approach that maximises internal space, while drive is provided by six, 240 kg BMW i3 batteries with an output of 240 kWh. Of course, The Icon’s miniature ferry style (even if highly luxurious) was probably only ever going to appeal to superyacht owners looking for a tender, so Tyde has wasted no time in launching a second model, The Open, which you see here. It’s a more traditional-looking 48-foot (400 kWh) dayboat that happens to be the world’s largest foiling motoryacht. Penned by BMW Designworks again, it features a centrally positioned helm for two, a breezy open cockpit and a below-deck that allows light to stream in from both the top and sides, ensuring a saloon that’s bright and airy. Top speed is 30 knots and cruising range is 50 nautical miles (or Cannes to Saint Tropez, and back), while a solar-panelled roof helps top up batteries when away from port.
