LONG COATS
It’s not just the classic single-breasted coat that has grown this season (notable examples being from Ami and Massimo Alba), it’s also lightweight parkas (such as those by Valentino and Dries Van Noten).

BROWN
Now you can wear brown in town. In fact, you can wear it just about anywhere this season – such is the panoply of brown items on offer across the board, from Dries Van Noten, to Fendi, Acne Studios, Sacai and of course Prada.

SHEARLING
If shearling isn’t already present in your wardrobe, it certainly deserves to be. Who says so? Well, Tom Ford and Brunello Cucinelli for starters. But if your budget won’t stretch that far then try some more contemporary brands like Our Legacy and Amiri. The key shearling piece? That would be a trucker jacket.

WINTER BRIGHTS
Traditionally winter is full of dreary shades of grey, black and brown. It still is, but this winter’s retro nostalgia brings back Day-Glo colours too. See Jun Takahashi’s Undercover down hoodie, Haider Ackermann’s bright outerwear for Berluti, and the neon velour turtlenecks that Demna Gvasalia designed for Balenciaga.

WINTER BOOTS
This season’s coolest footwear is the adventure-ready boot and designers have run the full gamut from technical (Roa) to folksy (Yuketen) to ultra-refined (Brunello Cucinelli). Wear yours with a pair of thick cuffed jeans or drawstring trousers – you won’t regret it when the weather starts to turn.

OVERSIZED KNITWEAR
What’s the most warming, comforting thing you can pick up this winter? That would be an enormous fluffy jumper. But make sure it’s oversized if you want to be on point. You’ll find excellent examples from the likes of Dries Van Noten, Lanvin, Balenciaga and Gucci among others.

TECHNICAL FABRICS
Man-made fabrics offer functional benefits but they’ve also become aesthetically pleasing to boot. So much in fact, they’re bragging about it. Take Virgil Abloh’s Off-White track bottoms for example, which are emblazoned with ‘Gore-Tex’ down the front. For other references check out Stone Island Shadow Project and Ten C.
There’s a major shift this autumn, both in the weather and in your wardrobe. So, we asked Mr. Porter for some advice on how to stay on trend.
